![David with the Head of Goliath. Oil Painting by Caravaggio](https://www.1st-art-gallery.com/media/catalog/product/cache/99c6efcc8b35cb325e214e7ea7b1ab5b/paintingsL/107935/david-with-the-head-of-goliath.webp)
This late oil painting was produced at the end of Caravaggio’s short and turbulent life, that he spent moving from Milan to Rome and then to Naples. It is believed that it was produced in Naples, and soon after bought by the Conde de Villamediana. Many researchers believe Caravaggio fled to Naples after accidentally killing a man on a brawl. Caravaggio had already explored David and Goliath on two other similar paintings, one in his early career and once again in 1607. It was a common habit for the artist to paint the same subject matter more than once or produce a series of sketches of similar pieces. That is the case with Lute Player. Caravaggio produced three nearly identical artworks, with only a few details differing among them.
In this version, David is standing with his body slightly turned to the side, holding the head of Goliath by the hair. He is holding a sword as a sign of justice. However, in his facial expression, we see a thoughtful, almost disturbed David, as if he was carrying the weight of the necessary act he just committed. His face is divided in the middle by light and shadow, having the light coming from the right-hand side of the viewer. It’s possible to see the details of his pale skin and rosy cheeks. The left side is engulfed by shadows, creating contrast and drama.
He is wearing a silky white robe. The drapery falls over his brown pants covering only half of his chest. On his hand, the head of Goliath shows his last moments and emotions. Despair and disbelief are perfectly portrayed on the dangling head, and his eyes are wide opened, as well as his mouth as if he was about to scream. Goliath’s head is also divided by light and shadow, the right-hand side fading into the darkness.
As if the scene itself wasn’t tragic and intense enough, Caravaggio exaggerates on the tenebrism, making the figures come out of a pitch black background. Their pale white skin contrasts profoundly with the darkness that surrounds them and suits a perfect mood. The palette is warm, as most of Caravaggio’s pieces. Almost everything but the cold steel is colored in earthy and brown tones. The chiaroscuro is so intense on this piece that almost evokes the feeling of being in the theater, watching a scene brightened by artificial light.

Note that for safety reasons we can only frame up to a certain size. Once the maximum size is reached the framing option is automatically disabled.
If you are planning to frame your painting yourself, use an existing frame, or frame it locally, you may choose to order your painting with a stretching service, meaning that it will arrive mounted on wooden bars.
If you're considering not framing your painting at all, you may opt for a Gallery Wrap. The term Gallery Wrap refers to the way the canvas is stretched, which is by wrapping it around thick stretcher bars, about 1.5 inch thick, with the canvas being secured to the back rather than the sides of those bars.
All orders ship with UPS, FedEx or DHL and will arrive directly to your home or office. A tracking number will be emailed to you as soon as the order leaves our studio so you can track it online. All orders ship express and usually arrive within 4-5 days from the shipping date.
